Part One
The room was half-dark, lit only by the moonlight streaming through the window. A salt crystal sitting on one of the bookshelves in the corner of the room shimmered in the pale light like a small moon. Beside it stood a small globe.
He slowly walked toward the corner of the room and lifted the globe from the shelf. It had been a long time since he had touched it, and a thin layer of dust had settled across much of the globe.
He spun it gently, and his gaze stopped over the Middle East.
Hearing footsteps behind him, he turned around. Arezou stood by the doorway, her right hand resting against the edge of the wall.
“Faramarz… are you okay?”
“Okay? I’m far from okay, Arezou. I don’t even know what’s right anymore and what isn’t.”
“The others are here. Don’t you want to join us?”
Faramarz felt the heaviness in the lines of his forehead. A cold sweat had formed on his skin. Still holding the globe, he slowly walked toward the door and took Arezou’s hand.
With the tip of his finger, he brushed the dust away from the map of Iran and looked at her.
“Do you see? It feels like the farther you go, the stronger the longing to see your beloved becomes…”
His throat tightened. He swallowed and continued.
“Do you remember before you came here? Even a simple cold you had would feel like a serious illness to me… Homeland is like a beloved. When you see it burning, it takes the breath out of you.”
“My dear Faramarz.”
Gently, Arezou smoothed the wrinkles on his forehead with her fingers and held him in an embrace.
“Why don’t you splash some water on your face and come join the others? Ardalan and Samaneh are here, and so are Shaghayegh and Reza. Mahshid is on her way too—she should arrive within the hour.”
“Alright. You go ahead. I’ll be there in five minutes.”
To be continued…
Part Two
The small flames rising from the fire in the middle of the yard added a quiet warmth to the night. Their orange glow danced across the faces. Faramarz was adjusting the logs with one hand, arranging the piece of wood placed in the fire, while scrolling through his phone with the other.
Ardalan approached him from the other side of the yard, a bottle of beer in his hand. Running his fingers through his hair, he said:
“Any news?”
Faramarz pressed his lips together.
“No… same as before. Just getting worse. Not knowing what’s going to happen… that’s what really gets to you.”
Ardalan smirked.
“It’s obvious what’s going to happen. Everything’s moving in the direction people wanted. What are you worried about?”
Faramarz let the piece of wood drop from his hand and turned to him.
“You're serious, Ardalan? Do you really think this is what we wanted?”
Mahshid, standing nearby with a plate of olives, cheese, strawberries, and some nuts, spoke before Faramarz could continue:
“I don’t know… but maybe if everything gets rebuilt from scratch, it’ll be better. At least then we’ll know what we actually want.”
Samaneh placed her drink on the table and turned sharply to her.
“How can you say that, Mahshid? People are there… under bombardment. How can you talk like this so easily?”
Mahshid brushed her hair aside.
“I’ve talked to a few people in Iran… many of them weren’t even unhappy. Some of them sounded hopeful.”
Samaneh’s voice rose slightly.
“They hit the IVF center… people who were hoping to have children. A school in Minab… did you not hear about any of this?”
Mahshid took a deep breath.
“How do we even know all of that is real? Maybe it’s not exactly what they’re showing…”
Samaneh, her face flushed, replied:
“Do you read anything outside the sources you already agree with, Mahshid?”
Arezou, who had been talking to Reza, turned her head:
“Mahshid… how many people are we even talking about? The ones you spoke to?”
Reza, who had been quiet until then, suddenly stared at his phone.
“Hold on…”
He refreshed the screen a few times, then tried again. His brows tightened.
“No…”
No one said anything.
More quietly, Reza added:
“It’s gone…”
A brief silence fell between them. The faint crackling of the fire suddenly sounded louder.
Reza exhaled slowly.
“Until now, at least we could get something through the internal network… now even that’s gone.”
Faramarz stared into the fire. The flames flickered softly.
He felt something inside him empty out—as if the thin thread that still connected him to there had suddenly snapped.
No one spoke.
Suddenly, the sound of Arezou’s phone ringing cut through the silence.
She hesitated for a moment, then answered.
“Hello…”
She listened.
“Really?”
A short pause.
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
She lowered the phone slightly and looked at the others.
“Marjan… she’s coming.”
The silence hadn’t fully broken.
Arezou continued, more softly:
“She was supposed to leave tonight… but she changed her flight. She wants to be here for Chaharshanbe Suri.”
The flames rose a little higher.
Faramarz was still staring into the fire.
For a brief moment, it felt easier to breathe.
To be continued…
Part Three
Faramarz poured a little water over the half-burned coals. A faint hiss rose as the steam lifted, and the smoke softened.
At the sound of the door, he turned.
Ardalan said, “Aren’t you coming in? Leave it… it’ll die out on its own.”
Faramarz watched the fire for a few more seconds, then came out of his thoughts and followed him inside, closing the door to the yard.
Inside felt warmer, but the silence had followed them in.
Reza, still holding his phone, suddenly said:
“Wait…”
He stared at the screen for a few seconds.
“They’re saying the power plants might be targeted…”
A brief silence settled.
Mahshid said,
“Well… they’re infrastructure after all. Maybe they have to. It can be rebuilt better afterward.”
Samaneh turned to her immediately.
“What are you saying, Mahshid? The power goes out… then the water… where exactly are people supposed to go back to?”
She paused, searching for words.
“We were still fighting for the most basic rights…”
Mahshid shrugged.
“There’s always a hard phase… but after that—”
Samaneh cut her off.
“After what? Things don’t just get fixed with ‘after.’”
Reza added more quietly,
“It won’t be that extreme… it’ll be hard, but not everything collapses… unless they hit everything at once…”
Arezou said softly,
“We’re lost… we still don’t even understand what’s happening.”
Ardalan said nothing. He went to the window, lit a cigarette, and held it slightly outside so the smoke wouldn’t come in.
The silence returned.
Marjan sat on the couch, her elbows resting on her knees, her hands clasped together. Her gaze was fixed somewhere beyond the room.
A few moments passed.
Then, without looking at anyone, she said quietly:
“There’s a line… it keeps coming back to me these days…”
She paused.
“Life has wings, as vast as death…”
No one spoke.
Samaneh said softly,
“Sohrab…”
Marjan gave a slight nod.
“Yes… but…”
Her words trailed off.
A few seconds passed.
Marjan took a deep breath and continued, more quietly:
“There’s something else too…”
Her eyes dropped for a moment.
“After great pain, a formal feeling comes—”
A heavy silence filled the room.
Marjan gave a faint smile, but her voice trembled:
“It’s like you reach a point where… it doesn’t hurt anymore, and it doesn’t heal either… it just… is.”
A tear slid quietly down her cheek.
Arezou stepped forward and embraced her.
Faramarz tapped his fingers lightly against his leg, then cleared his throat and looked at Marjan.
For a moment, he felt that what he had been unable to say was now sitting right in front of him.
A few seconds passed.
Faramarz said quietly:
“It’s strange…”
His gaze drifted from Marjan to the window, where Ardalan was standing.
“A few hours ago, I was looking at a globe…”
He paused.
“I don’t know why… but when you look from a distance… everything seems different.”
No one spoke.
Only the sound of breathing and silence filled the room.
To be continued…

Part Four
The sound of Mahshid’s phone broke the silence.
She answered in Swedish—quiet, brief. She nodded a few times.
When the call ended, she picked up her bag and stood.
“Sorry, everyone… I have to go. Lucas doesn’t have his key.”
Arezou stood as well.
“Do you want him to come here? Faramarz can pick him up.”
Mahshid gave a faint smile.
“No, it’s okay… no need.”
She hesitated for a moment, as if she wanted to say something, but didn’t.
“I should go.”
The door closed.
Silence settled back into the room.
A few seconds passed.
Faramarz said quietly,
“My brother… he was online.”
Reza looked up.
“Seriously? How?”
Faramarz shrugged.
“I don’t know… just for a moment.”
He looked at his phone.
“He sent a message.”
He paused, then began to read:
Hey brother,
I don’t know if this will reach you…
Just wanted to say we’re okay. Don’t worry.
I got online for a moment—I thought I should write quickly.
There are a lot of sounds… It’s all a mess here. But we’ve gotten used to it.
There’s just one thing that’s been bothering me…
The last time we spoke on video…
I don’t know why I didn’t look at you longer.
Just take care of yourself.
We’re like everyone else here… whatever happens, happens to all of us.
Faramarz didn’t continue.
He lowered the phone.
His eyes caught his reflection in the mirror.
He looked at it for a moment.
From the window, Ardalan said,
“You okay?”
Faramarz didn’t answer.
A few seconds passed.
Then, very quietly, he said:
“The last time we spoke on video…”
He stopped.
Ardalan stepped closer and placed a hand on his shoulder.
No one spoke.
A brief vibration.
Faramarz looked down.
He unlocked the screen.
Stared for a few seconds.
“Brother… just one thing—”
There was nothing else.
He noticed his brother’s status—two minutes ago.
Offline.
No one spoke.
Silence filled the room.
To be continued…
Part Five
It was past midnight, and all the guests had left. Faramarz opened his laptop.
He pulled up his email. He stared at the screen for a few moments. New message.
Subject: I miss you, brother…
He began to type:
Dearest Daniel,
I wanted to write to you…
He paused. Ran his hand across his forehead. Deleted a few words.
Started again:
Do you remember how we used to fight over chocolates at home?
A pause.
I miss you…
I wish I could hear your voice…
Or even get a message from you…
His fingers hovered over the keyboard. A few moments passed.
I don’t know what to say…
He typed a few words. Deleted them.
I’ve been thinking about you a lot these days…
It’s not something I can explain…
It just feels like a part of me is still there with you…
A pause.
I don’t know what’s really happening there…
But not knowing…
is worse.
His fingers remained still.
Brother…
I just…
He stopped again.
Please… just take care of yourselves…
He ran his hands through his hair, then stared at the screen.
I miss you…
I miss your arms…
A pause.
I don’t know why…
but these days… more than ever…
His fingers stopped.
A few seconds passed.
A tear fell onto the keyboard.
Faramarz stared at the screen.
His hand hovered over the Send button.
His vision blurred.
“Faramarz.” It was Daniel’s voice. From behind. Arms around him.
Faramarz buried his face in his shoulder.
The image faded.
Faramarz took a slow breath.
He pressed Send.
Under his breath, he whispered:
“I know it won’t reach you… but I’m sending it anyway…”
The message remained on sending…
To be continued…
Part Six: Two Weeks Later
Faramarz pressed the phone tighter against his ear.
“No, Ardalan—that’s not what I’m saying.”
He began pacing again.
“I mean… we’re both here. Not there.”
He stopped by the window.
“For me—for you—for any of us sitting outside Iran to decide what people inside should go through—war, bombing, more loss—what right do we have?”
He bit the edge of his nail, then pulled his hand away.
“No… don’t twist it.”
A pause.
“I’m not saying people inside should want this or shouldn’t want that. I’m saying it’s not for us to decide.”
His voice grew rough.
“We can worry. We can grieve. We can pray. But deciding for them? From here?”
He let out a dry breath.
“That’s the part I can’t accept.”
A pause.
Then, softer:
“…Yeah. I hear you.”
He ran his hand through his hair.
“Let’s talk about it later, yeah? I’ve gotta go.”
He ended the call.
Faramarz turned back—and saw Arezou standing by the door.
“How long have you been there?”
Arezou smiled slightly.
“What’s gotten into you? I just saw you on the phone. From Iran?”
“No… Ardalan,” he sighed.
He took a breath.
“Arezou… I don’t even know what’s right anymore. Sometimes…”
Arezou gently cut in:
“Maybe it’s not about that.”
She stepped closer, pulled a chair, and sat beside him.
“Maybe it’s about knowing where we can actually do something… and where we can’t.”
Faramarz looked away.
“We’re… helpless,” he said quietly.
“We can’t stop anything. We can’t start anything either.”
Arezou shook her head.
“I’m not talking about war.”
A pause.
“I mean smaller things. Real things.”
She met his eyes.
“Helping someone. Doing something that actually reaches someone.”
Silence settled between them.
Faramarz nodded faintly.
“I get you.”
To be continued…
Part Seven: Two Days Later
Faramarz stared at Arezou. She was biting her lip, her hands trembling.
“What’s the matter with you?” he asked.
Arezou looked up at him, her eyes wide.
“It’s… nothing. I just—”
Faramarz stepped closer.
“What are you talking about?”
Arezou clenched her phone in her fist, her mouth half open.
“A new bombing?”
She hesitated, then opened her hand and passed him the phone.
Faramarz took it.
His eyes moved across the screen.
He stopped.
Read it again.
“…Narges has been jailed since…”
He didn’t move.
His chest rose.
Arezou reached for his hand.
“Faramarz…”
He didn’t respond.
“Arez—”
The word broke.
He turned away, pushed the window open, and leaned out.
Cold air hit his face.
Behind him, Arezou said something—he couldn’t catch it.
A few moments passed.
Then he spoke, barely above a whisper:
“Now I understand why they didn’t tell us anything about her.”
To be continued...
Part Eight
Faramarz fidgeted with his phone.
“Look—I found it.”
He turned the screen toward her.
“She was… fifteen, maybe sixteen.”
Arezou leaned in.
“That long ago?”
“Yeah.”
She smiled.
“What’s with the pose?”
Faramarz let out a short laugh.
“I remember this…”
A brief pause.
“We were playing volleyball—all of us. She ended up on the winning side that day.”
He stopped.
“But—”
Arezou’s phone rang.
She answered quickly.
“Marjan… yeah, I’m here… no, we’re fine… what happened?”
A pause.
“Where?”
Another pause.
“…Tehran?”
Her expression changed.
“No… are they—”
She stopped.
“Okay… okay. Come here tonight, yeah? Don’t stay alone.”
She ended the call.
“Was it Marjan?”
Arezou nodded slowly.
“Poor Marjan…”
Her hand hovered near her mouth.
“What happened?”
“She just spoke to her uncle… their house is gone, Faramarz.”
A pause.
Faramarz ran a hand through his hair.
“They’re safe… right?”
“Yeah. They were out when it happened.”
Silence settled between them.
“That’s… strange,” Faramarz said.
Arezou looked at him.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“They lost the house… but they’re safe.”
A pause.
He ran a hand through his hair again.
“Uncle Reza… he doesn’t even know what’s going to happen to Narges.”
His voice lowered.
“Not even that.”
Arezou didn’t answer.
Another silence.
Then she stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him.
To be continued...
Part Nine: Days Later
Faramarz caught sight of Daniel’s message preview. He tapped it open.
Hi Kiddie, you okay, buddy?
I just got connected.
I dunno if you heard but...
Narges’s verdict came out... 10 years...
Talked to uncle Reza this morning... he is...
Offline again.
No further messages from Daniel.
Faramarz stared at the screen.
Then the doorbell rang.
He slowly lifted his eyes from the phone.
—
Arezou hugged Marjan.
“I’m glad you came.”
Faramarz watched them quietly from the hallway.
Marjan looked exhausted.
After a moment, he stepped closer.
“I’m sorry, Marjan…”
He stopped himself.
“Where are they staying?”
Arezou glanced at him.
“Let her sit first, Faramarz.”
He nodded slightly.
“You’re right.”
Arezou turned back to Marjan.
“Tea or something cold?”
“Tea’s fine.”
A faint smile crossed her face.
She looked at Faramarz.
“They’ve been staying in a hotel these past few days…”
Faramarz’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
“Yeah… come up.”
He ended the call and looked at Arezou and Marjan.
“Ardalan’s here,” he said quietly. “Said he was nearby.”
—
Ardalan looked around.
“Everything okay?”
“Want a drink?” Faramarz asked.
“Beer.”
Ardalan gave a faint smile and lit a cigarette.
“So you heard anything about Narges?”
Faramarz stared at him but did not reply.
Arezou spoke quietly.
“Ardalan… Marjan’s uncle’s house was completely demolished.”
“Seriously?”
Marjan leaned slightly closer.
“It is actually one of the many...”
Ardalan fell silent for a moment.
“I’m sorry, Marjan…”
He paused.
“What about Narges, Faramarz?”
Arezou gently replied:
“She’ll be taken soon, Ardalan.”
“Damn it…”
Ardalan stood up and tapped Faramarz’s shoulder.
“What can your uncle even do now?”
Marjan looked up quietly.
“Before the war, my uncle once said he couldn’t do much for his children…”
She paused and cleared her throat.
“He said at least he could leave this house behind for them...”
To be continued...
Part Ten: Two Weeks Later
There were murmurs in the crowd before the storyteller began to speak. She introduced herself, and at first, laughter rose here and there through the packed salon.
Then her voice lowered.
“What is right? What is wrong?”
The stage was dim, and most of the audience sat in darkness.
Faramarz murmured under his breath:
“What does it mean to be tamed?”
He touched Arezou’s hand. She glanced at him, and he smiled back.
By the epilogue, barely anyone shifted in their seats.
Applause.
Some in the audience remained seated.
Others stared quietly ahead.
Faramarz took a deep breath.
Arezou tapped his shoulder.
“What’s on your mind?”
He shrugged.
“I wish...”
“Thinking about Narges?”
Faramarz nodded.
“And about us, here.”
—
Faramarz’s phone began vibrating in his pocket.
He glanced at the screen and answered quietly.
“Hey... you okay?”
A pause.
“Yeah... send it to me.”
He lowered the phone slowly.
Arezou looked at him.
“Everything okay?”
“That was Mahshid.”
Arezou tilted her head slightly.
“Mahshid?”
Faramarz nodded.
“She called me out of nowhere...”
A pause.
“She wants me to speak to Lucas.”
Arezou looked at him for a moment.
“I don’t understand... why?”
Faramarz looked away.
“She and Lucas are separating.”
Part Eleven: A Weekend
The central table in the living room was adorned with cubes of cheese, a small bowl of olives, popcorn, dried plums, and an assortment of cocktails and soft drinks.
Faramarz stared at the news ticker crawling across the television screen and drummed his fingers on the back of his other hand.
Ardalan tapped him on the shoulder.
“Not joining us outside?”
Faramarz looked up.
“You know when Lucas is getting here?”
He glanced around the room.
“Mahshid's coming too, right?”
“That's the plan.”
Ardalan pulled a chair closer and sat down.
“Things aren't looking great between those two, huh?”
Faramarz remained silent for a moment.
“It doesn't seem that way.”
A pause.
“I sent him a message. He said he'd come by, and we'd talk then.”
Ardalan smirked.
“Old university friends catching up?”
Another smirk.
“Or preaching to save the marriage?”
Faramarz shook his head.
“Not a chance.”
The doorbell rang.
Lucas entered the house.
Ardalan shook his hand firmly, pulled him in, and hugged him.
Lucas took off his coat and looked around the room.
“Ardalan, is Mahshid already here?”
“Not yet, mate.”
Lucas greeted Faramarz.
Everyone else was in the backyard.
Ardalan watched Lucas for a moment.
“Whiskey like old times?”
“Not really, mate. Ain't young anymore.”
“Come on, man. You're not going to side with Faramarz today, are you?”
Ardalan winked.
“How're you holding up these days?” Faramarz asked.
Lucas touched his forehead, took off his glasses, cleaned them with a cloth, and put them back on.
“Not too bad.”
Faramarz patted him on the shoulder.
“Still working with the university?”
“That part's actually going well, but...”
“But?”
Lucas looked directly into Faramarz's eyes.
“I knew she'd call you, Faramarz.”
He paused.
“We were friends before I married Mahshid.”
Another pause.
“So yeah... I feel awful about that.”
Ardalan poured him a whiskey.
“You get worked up about everything.”
Marjan, Samaneh, and Arezou came inside and greeted Lucas.
Then the doorbell rang again.
Mahshid entered the house.
She looked around the room and greeted everyone.
Silence.
Only the low murmur of the television remained.
Lucas lowered his eyes.
For a moment, he stood up as if to say something.
Instead, he sat back down.
Nobody spoke.
Faramarz looked from Lucas to Mahshid and shook his head.
Ardalan broke the silence.
“Alright,” he said. “Before this gathering becomes any gloomier...”
A few smiles appeared around the room.
Even Mahshid managed a faint one.
Ardalan put his arm around Samaneh.
“There’s actually a reason we dragged all of you here tonight.”
Samaneh rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please, Ardalan.”
“Fine,” Ardalan said. “You tell them.”
Samaneh looked around the room.
A nervous smile crossed her face.
“We're having a baby.”
For a second, nobody reacted.
Then Arezou gasped.
Marjan's face lit up.
Faramarz stood up immediately.
“Seriously?”
Samaneh nodded.
This time, everyone was smiling.
Even Lucas.
Even Mahshid.
To be continued…
Part Twelve: A Few Weeks Later
Faramarz half-watched the TV.
The flickering news kept pulling him back.
Meanwhile, he fidgeted with his phone.
Arezou stood in front of the hallway mirror by the front door, putting on makeup and combing her hair.
She flipped her hair over her shoulder and turned to Faramarz.
“Are you sure you're not joining afterward?”
“No, enjoy your time with Marjan.”
His eyes stayed on the screen a second too long.
“Are you both coming back for dinner?”
Arezou smiled.
“Let's see — we may just grab something, but we'll let you know.”
“Okay.”
Arezou left the house.
Faramarz changed the TV channel, raised the volume, and listened more intently, waiting for the news.
“As we know, the truce is not stable, and both sides should exercise caution…”
His phone rang, and he answered a video call from Daniel.
“Hey, Kiddie. I've missed your face.”
Daniel's face was pixelated and blurry.
“Daniel…”
Faramarz cleared his throat, touching his forehead.
“How's everything going?”
The screen froze, and the call disconnected.
Faramarz called him back at once.
“Kiddie, my VPN is not working very well…”
He smiled.
“But good enough to see you, at least.”
“How's everyone, Daniel? Mother? How's Narges doing? Have you visited her?”
“Even Uncle Reza could not visit her. He was not permitted.”
Faramarz's eyebrows furrowed.
“What do you mean, he could not? He can still make an inquiry, right?”
Daniel's voice decayed, and the connection made his words unclear.
His phone rang again.
Faramarz immediately answered.
“How is Uncle Reza?”
Daniel turned off his screen.
“Kiddie, the connection is not stable. Let's try voice only.”
“How's Uncle Reza doing, Daniel?”
“He was always asking about you…” “He wanted…”
Faramarz raised the phone and leaned it closer to his mouth.
“What do you mean, was, Daniel?”
He felt the tightening in his neck, and he could not move.
“Kiddie?”
The voice came from the phone.
Faramarz fumbled to pick up the phone again.
He tried to pull himself together.
“Does Narges know?”
Then he murmured to himself, as if he were not on the call.
“Now…”
“We wanted…”
Daniel's voice did not linger too long.
The call reconnected.
“Kiddie, you there?”
“I'm listening…”
Faramarz swallowed.
“We wanted to reach out to her, but—”
“Daniel?”
He heard nothing, checked his phone, and saw Daniel was last online a minute ago.
Faramarz walked into the hallway and stood right in front of the mirror.
He stared at himself; it was as though he had become ten years older in a second.
He remembered how, unlike the other kids, he had never liked chocolate — and how Uncle Reza always set aside roasted almonds just for him.
In the mirror, a tear rolled down his face.
He traced the droplet with one finger on the cold glass, then pressed both hands to the mirror and wept.
His phone rang.
He rushed back toward the room.
It was Ardalan.
Faramarz was reluctant, but he picked it up.
“I guess you heard it? Truce, it is, right?”
Ardalan's voice came from the line.
A pause.
“Is this what you were looking for?”
Faramarz cleared his throat and replied hoarsely.
“I was never—”
He paused, drew a deep breath.
“I've never been looking for anything in all this. I wanted nothing but peace, that's it.”
Ardalan pushed straight past it.
“You and your 'I'm not for this, I'm not for that'—for God's sake, stop it for once, Faramarz.”
“Ardalan,” Faramarz said hurriedly. “Ardalan, I'm sorry — I've got a migraine coming on. I'll call you later, all right?”
“Oh, sure, man. Rest up, catch up with you later,” Ardalan replied.
Faramarz walked toward the bookshelf, took one of the books, flipped through the pages, and pulled out a photo.
It was Uncle Reza, Daniel, Narges, and himself as a kid.
In the photo, the boy clutched a light-brown paper bag full of roasted almonds.
He touched Uncle Reza's face, brought the photo up to his lips, and kissed it.
He was about to slip the photo back into the book when his eyes caught Narges's innocent face.
His gaze lingered there.
He let out a slow breath and put the photo back.
His eyes had welled, and the image blurred.

«After great pain, a formal feeling comes—»
